Teff - The New Superfood Ancient Grain

18th October, 2015

If you haven’t yet heard of, or tried the superfood Teff, you’re missing out. Teff is a fine, ancient grain that grows predominantly in Ethiopia, as it thrives in difficult climates. Teff is high in protein, calcium and iron, which is what makes it so beneficial to the health food community. Here at Bill’s Organics we use Teff flour because of its nutritional value and great taste.

1. Nutritional value

Teff contains eight amino acids that are vital for your body to grow and repair. As well as containing high amounts of calcium and protein, Teff also contains Vitamin C, which is not usually found in grains. Teff is recommended for people with low blood iron levels because of the amount of iron it contains and how easily it is absorbed.

2. Gluten free

Teff is a gluten-free grain, which means it is a great alternative for those living with gluten intolerance or celiac disease, or who choose a gluten-free diet.

3. Low in sodium

Teff is great for those looking for a ‘heart-healthy’ diet due to its low sodium content. Because of this, it can also help lower blood pressure and cholesterol.

4. Helps manage blood sugar levels

As if you needed any more convincing that Teff is a beneficial grain to start including in your diet, it can also assist diabetics in regulating their blood sugar levels. The grain contains 20-40 per cent resistant starches and has a relatively low GI.

* Fun fact: Ethiopia's long distance runners often attribute their energy and endurance to TEFF!
